Los Angeles Auxiliary Bishop David G. O'Connell and Los Angeles Archbishop José H. Gomez, then vice president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, share a light moment Nov. 12, 2019, after Archbishop Gomez was elected USCCB president during the bishops' fall general assembly in Baltimore. On Feb. 18, 2023, Los Angeles County sheriffs arrived at Bishop O'Connell's home at 1 p.m. to find the 69-year-old prelate dead of a gunshot wound to his upper torso, according to local news reports. His death was later ruled a homicide and an investigation was under way to find a suspect and motive. A native of Ireland, Bishop O'Connell spent most of his four decades as a priest ministering in the inner city of Los Angeles. (OSV News photo/CNS file, Bob Roller)
