The Pope John Paul II Preparatory School boys’ bowling team finished as the runner-up in the Division II bowling state championships, and sophomore Finn Donnelly took second place in the individual tournament. Donnelly, who entered the individual tournament as the 17th seed, finished the semifinals with the top score. His total pinfall for six games was 1206 for a 201 average.
The top six finishers in the semifinals move on to the finals round. In the championship match, Donnelly fell to Connor Thomas of Donelson Christian Academy.
Pope Prep sophomore Zane Collins finished 11th in the semifinals with a six-game total of 1057 and 176.2 average, and Father Ryan High School junior Robert Pareigis finished 21st with a 944 total and 157.3 average.
In the Division II boys’ team tournament, Pope Prep entered as the 3-seed from the Middle Region and rolled its way to the championship match with wins over Boyd Buchanan, 13-10, and Briarcrest 12-11. The Knights fell to Lipscomb Academy 15-8 the championship match.
Bowling for Pope Prep during the tournament were Donnelly, Collins, Andrew Williams, Tyler Silkwood, Levi Lemay and Lake Stahlhut.
In the Division II girls’ team tournament, Pope Prep, the 2 seed from the Middle Region, fell 20-3 to St. Agnes in the first round. St. Cecilia Academy, the Middle Region’s 4 seed, lost 19-4 to eventual state champion Friendship Christian School.
St. Cecilia bowlers in the tournament included: Mehetabel Mikael, Susanna Donnelly, Ainsley Howard, Allison Cliffel, Amelia Pyburn, Anna Donnelly, Lainey Sulak, Emma Wanucha, Madelyn Christian, Carly Cavanaugh, Megan O’Dwyer, Rita Elmasry and Guadalupe Cervantes.
Pope Prep bowlers in the tournament included Phaedra Xie, Nicole Lamberg, Jillian Dayrit, Ella Stahlhut and Mackenzie Francis.
In the Division II girls’ individual tournament, Father Ryan senior Sydney Long finished ninth in the semifinals with a six-game total of 951 and a 158.5 average. Pope Prep senior Mackenzie Francis finished 11th with a 909 total and a 151.5 average, and St. Cecilia senior Anna Donnelly finished 15th with an 864 total and a 144 average.
