Several Catholic schools, parishes and institutions in the Diocese of Nashville garnered recognition in the Nashville Scene’s Best of Nashville issue.

In the Readers’ Poll, Father Ryan High School, Christ the King School and Church, St. John Vianney School and Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital Midtown all finished on top in various categories.

And in the Writers’ Choice selections, the McGruder Family Resource Center, which is managed by Catholic Charities of Tennessee, was honored as the “Best Tornado-Relief Home Base.”

When tornadoes swept through Nashville on March 3, “McGruder became North Nashville’s relief hub,” wrote the Scene. “Computer labs became storage facilities, classrooms housed volunteer training efforts, and the parking lot and gymnasium accepted thousands of boxes and bags of diapers, canned goods and other donations. Scores of volunteers made their way to the center to pitch in.”

For the Readers’ Poll, it’s common for organizations to encourage their communities to vote for them.

Father Ryan in Nashville was voted by the readers as the Best High School (Public or Private).

St. John Vianney School teacher and athletic director Brady Forrest was voted the Best Youth Sports Coach.

Christ the King School finished atop the Readers’ Poll in several categories, including: Best Middle School (Public or Private), Best Private School, and Best Preschool. St. John Vianney School in Gallatin finished as the runner-up in the Best Preschool category for 2020.

Christ the King School also finished runner-up in the category of Best Elementary School (Public or Private), and teachers Sarah Osborne and Stephanie Wyatt both were voted runners-up in the category of Best Teacher (Public or Private).

The school at Christ the King wasn’t the only part of the parish to earn top votes in the Readers’ Poll. Christ the King Pastor Father Dexter Brewer was voted Best Religious Leader, and the parish was the runner-up as the Best Place to Worship. Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital Midtown was voted by readers as the Best Place to Have a Baby and runner-up as Best Hospital.
