Sister Mary George Barrett, O.P., a member of the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia Congregation in Nashville for 71 years, died Jan. 1, 2021. She was 91 years old.
Born in Nashville, Tennessee, Sister Mary George was the daughter of the late George and Anne Elizabeth Barrett. She graduated from Saint Cecilia Academy in 1947 and entered the Dominican Sisters in 1949, making profession of vows in 1951.
Sister Mary George served for more than 40 years as a teacher and principal in Catholic schools in Tennessee, Illinois, Alabama and Louisiana. She taught at her alma mater, St. Cecilia Academy, intermittently for a total of 17 years between 1949 and 1989. Sister served as local prioress (local superior) of St. Cecilia Motherhouse during the years of its renovation and expansion.
She is survived by 11 nieces and nephews and their spouses: Mr. and Mrs. Mark (Mary) Brewer, Mr. and Mrs. Joe (Katie) Cain, Mr. and Mrs. Bobbie (Lucy) Thomason, Mr. and Mrs. John M. Dugan, Mr. and Mrs. George Dugan, Mr. and Mrs. James Dugan, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas (Carol) Dugan, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry (Alice) Goble, Mr. and Mrs. Richard (Ann) Duesterberg, Mr. and Mrs. Barry (Kay) Kerbel, and Ms. Nancy Widman.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Monday, Jan. 4, in the Chapel of St. Cecilia with many members of the Congregation present. Burial in the convent cemetery immediately followed.
