Bishop J. Mark Spalding celebrated Mass with the St. Edward School community on Tuesday, Jan. 17, at St. Edward Church. After Mass and a few hellos to students in the hallway, Bishop Spalding visited the Heart of Mary House for the first time where he learned of the care that its many volunteers give hospice patients across Tennessee. Since Heart of Mary House opened in August, the ministry has seen eight patients come in, with two currently in residence. The ministry has gathered a plethora of volunteers including University Catholic students and, soon, seminarians in their pastoral year. Bishop Spalding offers a blessing to Abel, a hospice patient who has been at Heart of Mary House for two months, as Kim Derrick, founder and director of ministry, looks on.
